Football fans want to know all there is to know about the clubs they support. From the team’s performance on the pitch, to transfer rumours, to the politicking of club management; fans want to know every itty-bitty detail.
However, there are gaps in the football calendar where nothing really happens, where the club players get called up to represent their countries in friendlies or competitions. These are the times when the fans get bored and all they do is pray that a player whose performance is pivotal to the success of their club comes back in one piece, uninjured.
This gap is what the football faithful in the English Premier League call the ‘interlul’. A break in transmission, a time when fans twiddle their fingers, a time when everyone has the ‘football itch’ and can’t wait till the games get started again.
It was during this interlul that I stumbled upon the blog – www.misterspruce.co.uk
The blog is a mishmash of niches you don’t usually ever find; it is, according to the articles available and the ‘about page’, a blog about Arsenal FC and Affordable Menswear. Weird.
After looking around the blog, one thing that caught my eye was the section for the category of articles called ‘Chronicles of the Cannon’. This ‘series’ as they are called is based not on affordable menswear but on Arsenal FC; a medieval satire if you wish and a very funny one at that.
An info-graphic on the blog better explained the hierarchy and roles of the characters which I prior found a bit disjointed in the beginning. The satire is crafted in the form of a playwright set in England in 16-17AD; by the way, they refer to England as Britannia.
Characters unfold with the Kingship moving from King Pete (who I believe to be Peter Hillwood) to King Chips Keswick who is referred to as his royal crispiness. Arsenal is called Arsenalia and Arsene Wenger is given the title of Duke of Ashburtonshire. The players are Knights of the Round Table and the fans are called the noblemen of Arsenalia.
Interestingly, all other Premier League clubs are enemies who try to subdue or bring Arsenal under their control and every match is seen as a battle in which the knights either triumph over their enemies or lose.
An amusing feature of the satire is the names they give to the opposing teams; it even goes as far as calling Sir Alex Ferguson the sorcerer Ferguman, most probably culled from the sorcerer Saruman from the Lord of the Rings franchise.
My take on this is that, if you need something to distract you from the dullness or inactivity of the interlul, then this hilarious satire series on Arsenal FC is worth a read. Word has it that it had garnered a sizeable readership and has been copyrighted to secure possible TV rights.
