The City of Miami Arts and Entertainment Council Announces Sponsorship of 2013 and 2014 YoungArts Miami

MIAMI – Sept. 17, 2013 – The City of Miami Arts and Entertainment Council (MAEC) announces its support for the 2013 and 2014 editions of YoungArts Miami, a regional program of the National YoungArts Foundation. MAEC contributed $6,000 in support of this year's YoungArts Miami for the participation of 10 Winners from the City of Miami. YoungArts Miami 2013 was held from April 10 – 14, and offered the Nation's brightest young artists from South Florida life-changing experiences and scholarship opportunities. Due to its success, MAEC will also sponsor YoungArts Miami in 2014.

"The City of Miami Arts and Entertainment Council congratulates all Winners," added Mercedes Cisneros, MAEC Chairman. "Including Mateo Nava, one of the 10 Winners from the City of Miami who was additionally acknowledged as a U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts."

YoungArts Miami is one of three regional programs modeled after the organization's signature national program, YoungArts Week, through which YoungArts recognizes emerging artists for their outstanding work and accomplishments in one of nine disciplines across the visual, literary and performing arts fields from across the nation. This year 685 students were named YoungArts Winners thereby receiving monetary recognition from the Foundation and eligibility to participate in the Emmy-nominated HBO series YoungArts MasterClass and YoungArts' regional events as well as signature events in Washington, DC.

YoungArts is also the exclusive nominating agency for the U.S. Presidential Scholars in the Arts, the highest honor that can be awarded to any artistically talented graduating high school senior. Up to 60 students were nominated by YoungArts to become a U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts, 20 of whom were selected for the honor by the White House appointed Commission on Presidential Scholars.

All participants in YoungArts Miami 2013 were given the opportunity to present their work to the public through a free performance at the Olympia Theater at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts directed by renowned actor, musician and choreographer Malcolm Gets, and an exhibition guest curated by Miami Art Museum's Director, Thom Collins at BFI (Bas Fisher Invitational).

In these programs, Winners were given the opportunity to participate in interdisciplinary workshops and intensive master classes with renowned masters in their field. YoungArts Miami gave Winners from South Florida the experience of being mentored by master artists including: Rosie Perez(theater, dance), Octavio Campos (multi-disciplinary arts), Campbell McGrath (writing), James Rosenquist (visual art), YoungArts notable alumni Daniel Arsham (visual art), Naomi Fisher (visual art), and Philip Neal (dance).
