Seattle, WA, USA (September 9, 2013) -- Women make up half the movie audience but last year only 11 percent of the movies had female leads. Worse than that is the fact that in Hollywood movies only 28 percent of the speaking characters were female. The University of Southern California says that's down by a third from five years prior.
The new independent movie being partially funded by an Indiegogo campaign by the award winning filmmaking team of producer Susan Goforth and director Timothy Hines plans to change the balance a little with a movie about a woman named Nellie Bly, who stormed into the man's world of journalism in the 1880s, a time when virtually no jobs existed for women of any kind. Not only did she land a job as a top reporter, but she worked for the most famous newspaper on the planet, The World, owned and run by Joseph Pulitzer of the famed Pulitzer Prize.
The movie, 10 Days in a Madhouse, follows the real life experience of Ms. Bly, who at 23, faked insanity to get committed to a notorious mental institution in order to expose corruption, abuse and murder.
"Digital technology is changing the game in Hollywood," says Susan Goforth. "Movie can be mad on a fraction of what they once cost. But the balance of accurately representing half the populace, women, in leading roles is not changing fast enough. The Hollywood numbers reflect something more out of the 1950s than the 21st century. Nellie Bly's story is extraordinary in how she did what was considered a man's job. And she did it better than most. She was called 'fearless,' and 'the greatest reporter in America.'"
Short of Hollywood money, the moviemakers are putting the production together out of their own pockets and turning to the world to help finish out the budget with the crowdfunding platform of Indiegogo, where anyone can contribute to help bring Nellie Bly's Story, 10 Days In A Madhouse, to life.
