Student Behavior to Be Main Factor in Hostel Residency

The Post-graduate Government College says to retain a hostel seat a student must behave well and study

Obtaining and retaining a hostel seat in Post-graduate Government College in Sector 11, Chandigarh, India, will be getting tougher in the coming months. The college administration is attempting to create a more sober approach towards studies. Hostel seats will be allotted based on merit for each college year until students complete their degree.

"As of now, students are not asked to leave the hostel seat unless there is a major issue. Such cases are very rare," said J S Raghu, the college principal. From one year to the next “from the first to the second and thereafter to the third year, for example,” students can retain their hostel seats unless they have disciplinary issues against them or are severely short of attendance.

The norms will be becoming stricter in an effort to keep students that take their studies seriously in the highly sought after hostel seats across the city. "Though students should also enjoy college life, we want to drive home the message that they should take studies more seriously," said Raghu. He noted that the rule changes were under consideration and would not be enforced for a time. There are a total of 330 rooms in three separate facilities; one in Sector 15 and two being on the campus -- the “main hostel, new hostel and general hostel” in PGCC-11.

When applying for admission to a hostel an old resident’s previous conduct will be considered for approval, "their merit and conduct in the hostel in the previous session will be taken into consideration." Additionally, 50% of lectures delivered per month must be attended. The guidelines will be followed strictly and any failing will result in a student having to vacate his/her hostel room.
