LegalLogs: Michael Douglas Provides Words of Wisdom to All, Putting Off Divorce Can Lead to Greater Regret

Hollywood veteran Michael Douglas recently admitted that he wishes that he would have divorced his first wife sooner. LegalLogs suggests that many other troubled spouses may be able to learn a lesson from Douglas.

As a company that provides an organizational service to those facing divorce, LegalLogs knows that the dissolution of a marriage is hardly ever a peaceful experience. In fact, many times divorce can prove expensive and combative—such as in the case of famed celebrity Michael Douglas, who divorced his spouse of 23 years—Diandra Luker—in 2000. While the divorce cost $45 million and a great deal of public attention, a recent article from Parade reveals that Douglas has no regrets about his split—except that it did not occur sooner. For LegalLogs, Douglas’ lesson is one that may ring true for many individuals putting off divorce.

According to the article, Michael Douglas reflects, “I know I’m going to get into trouble here. I have nothing against her and in fact I’m very fond of my first wife. But we should have ended that marriage eight or 10 years earlier.” And while many may wonder why Douglas did not end the marriage sooner, he reveals that much time was spent on trying to repair the relationship. Specifically, he explains, “It took me too long to realize that if you go to a marriage counselor to resolve problems, it’s in his interest to keep the marriage going…Because if I end the marriage he’s got no business. I think Diandra would probably say the same thing. That’s the only clear regret that I have.”

In response, Chris Kennedy—founder of LegalLogs—comments, “I think a lot of men—and women—can relate to Douglas’ experiences. Whether one tries to stay in a marriage due to fear of failure, to save money or protect the children, it is important for both spouses to realize when the relationship is over. Those who spend time trying to repair a marriage that is forever broken may end up causing themselves more anguish and creating a more expensive divorce. Simply put, if you know a marriage is over, it is sometimes best to bite the bullet and save yourself the time and money by going forward with a divorce.”

While pursuing divorce may seem like a bitter end for many, LegalLogs highlights Douglas as one example of how ending a marriage can lead to better things. For instance, the Parade article explains that despite many recent hardships—Douglas is now happily married to wife Catherine Zeta-Jones.

“If you are thinking about a divorce and are ready to move on, it is best to prepare for the split in every way you can—both emotionally and practically. Those who are able to take divorce head on and simplify resulting legal matters are often able to approach a better future much sooner than those who stay in a broken relationship,” Chris Kennedy of LegalLogs concludes.
